PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment derivative and a pigment dispersion agent, inhibiting the flocculation of a pigment in an aqueous or non-aqueous vehicle, and water-based ink using the same.

SOLUTION: The pigment derivative comprises a compound of formula (I) (wherein Q is an organic coloring matter residue having an aromatic ring; A is an ethylene group, a phenylene group or a naphthylene group and optionally contains a substituent; R is a hydroxy group or a group of the formula: -NH-A-Z where Z is a group of the formula: -SO3H or -COOH; and n is an integer of 1-4) or a metal salt, an ammonium salt or an amine salt thereof.
