PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical assist magnetic head for forming or reproducing a narrow recording mark by reducing the width of a temperature distribution on an optical assist medium, and thus executing recording/reproducing at a high density. SOLUTION: The optical assist magnetic head 1 includes a metal film 2 in the surface of a light source 10 facing an optical assist medium 50. A plurality (e.g., 3) of optical openings 13 are formed in a row in the metal film 12. These optical openings 13 are formed along a straight line direction passing through a recording magnetic pole 17 which is an electromagnetic conversion section of a magnetic field generation mechanism 11 and parallel to the scanning direction of the optical assist medium 50. Thus, a near field is intensified by increasing the resonance of a surface plasmon polariton. A concave or convex light scattering section is disposed around the optical opening 13.
