Disclosed is a process for production of a ß-amino-a-hydroxy acid amide derivative which is important for the production of a pharmaceutical or the like. A ß-amino-a-hydroxy acid amide derivative having a high purity can be produced stably in an industrial scale by reacting a ß-(N-protected)amino-a-hydroxycarboxylic acid with an amine in the presence of a given solvent to convert the hydroxycarboxylic acid into a ß-(N-protected)amino-a-hydroxy acid amide derivative, deprotecting the resulting derivative into a ß-amino-a-hydroxy acid amide derivative, subjecting the deprotected derivative to a crystallization process using a protic solvent to yield the ß-amino-a-hydroxy acid amide derivative as crystals.
