A cooking apparatus particularly arranged for cooking toasted sandwiches and the like comprises a toasting iron including a pair of hingedly connected platens (21, 22) arranged to receive a food product to be cooked therebetween, the apparatus further comprising an oven (12) for receiving and heating the iron to cook the food product therein, wherein the iron is slidably mounted to a guide member which extends into the cooking station.
