PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving the hydrolysis reaction rate of chloromethyl groups and also improving the yield of a hydrolysis product. SOLUTION: This method for hydrolyzing the chloromethyl groups bonding with an aromatic ring is provided by performing hydrolysis by heating with the irradiation of a microwave. An aromatic hydroxymethyl compound is produced from the aromatic chloromethyl compound, an aromatic aldehyde compound is produced from an aromatic dichloromethyl compound and an aromatic carboxylic compound is produced from an aromatic trichloromethyl compound.
