Disclosed is a method for production of an optically active biphenylalanine compound represented by the formula (2) or a salt thereof or an optically active biphenylalanine ester compound represented by the formula (3), wherein the method comprises hydrolyzing a biphenylalanine ester compound represented by the formula (1) with a protease derived from a microorganism belonging to the genus Bacillus in the presence of at least one alkali selected from an alkali metal hydroxide and an alkali earth metal hydroxide: (1); (2); and (3) wherein R¹ represents an alkyl group or the like; R² represents a protecting group for an amino group; and R³ and R⁴ independently represent a hydrogen atom or the like.
