<p>Disclosed are a metal chelate compound of a novel azo compound represented by the general formula (1) below and a metal, a novel azo compound represented by the general formula (2) below, and an optical recording medium having an azo metal chelate compound in a recording layer, which is capable of performing good recording and reproducing by using a laser having a wavelength of 300-900 nm. (1) (In the formula, ring A represents a carbocyclic aromatic ring or a heterocyclic aromatic ring, and two adjacent atoms in the ring are bonded with each other via a linking group represented by the general formula (a) below and form at least one imide ring; R<SUB>1</SUB> and R<SUB>2</SUB> independently represent a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or the like; and Y represents a group having an active hydrogen.)
