A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery with large discharge capacity that even after abstraction of lithium up to a high potential ensures stable structure and good cycle characteristics; especially such a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having an improved positive electrode. There is provided a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery equipped with a positive electrode containing a positive electrode active substance consisting of sodium oxide, a negative electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte, characterized in that the sodium oxide contains lithium and that restriction is effected so as to cause the molar amount of lithium to be smaller than that of sodium.
