A system (110) for electronically disinfecting air includes a first electrode (121), at least a second electrode (122), the first and second electrode being spaced apart from one another. The surfaces of the first or second electrode include a dielectric layer having a thickness of 10 to 100 angstroms disposed thereon. An electrical power supply (130) is connected between the first and said second electrode, wherein pollutants in air to be disinfected are destroyed by exposure of the air to surfaces of the first or second electrode.
