A method for cleaning hydrocarbon contaminated sand. A first step involves introducing sand into a container containing water to form a sand/water slurry. A second step involves circulating the slurry within the container by means of water jets to cause abrasive contact between the sand. The sand is cleaned by abrasive contact with itsel f.
