<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode having high cycle characteristics by suppressing increase in impedance of the whole negative electrode using an active material nuclei in which at least charge and discharge of lithium ions are made possible and the ratio A/B of volume A in a charged state to volume B in a discharged state is 1.2 or more; and to provide a battery using the negative electrode. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery has a mix layer containing a composite negative active material comprising the active material nuclei 11 capable of at least storing and releasing lithium ions; carbon nano-fibers 12; and a catalyst element 13. The carbon nano-fibers 12 have elasticity and are attached onto the surface of the active material nuclei 11. The catalyst element is at least one kind selected from the group comprising copper. iron, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum, and manganese, and accelerates the growth of the carbon nano-fibers12.
