A record member having a track recorded thereon is driven so that an energy beam (e.g. an electron beam) scans the track which is thereby caused to emit energy to provide a playback signal, and a synchronizing signal which controls the speed of the record member also causes adjustment of the direction of the beam so as to move its point of impingement on the record member in the direction of the track.
