A safety belt sensing apparatus for a vehicle is provided to promote safety for a seat occupant by preventing starting of an engine and generating alarm sound if the seat occupant has not worn a safety belt. A safety belt sensing apparatus includes an optical sensor(10), a safety belt switch(20), a safety belt sensor(30), a controller, and an alarm unit. The optical sensor is arranged on each seat(S) of a vehicle so as to sense the existence of a seat occupant on the seat. The safety belt switch is turned on/off in accordance with the engagement between a tongue plate(71) and a buckle(72) of a safety belt(70). The safety belt sensor is mounted on the safety belt so as to sense whether the seat occupant on the seat has worn the safety belt. The controller judges whether to start an engine or generate alarm sound in accordance with the operation control signal input from the optical sensor and the safety belt sensor. The alarm unit includes a warning lamp and a warning speaker mounted on an instrument panel of a driver seat so as to permit the seat occupant to perceive the warning.
