An apparatus and a method for adjusting the brightness of a back light in a portable terminal are provided to reduce power consumption to prolong the use time of a battery by controlling power supplied to the back light according to a mode of the portable terminal. A key input part(108) changes the operational mode of a portable terminal. A back light unit(106) changes the operation mode of the portable terminal. A power supply(104) supplies power to the portable terminal. A controller(100) controls the brightness of the back light unit(106) by changing the intensity of the power of the power supply according to the operation mode of the portable terminal. The operational mode represents a game mode, a music listening mode, a camera mode, and a time setting mode. The back light unit emits light with the brightness at a preset ratio.
