1203292 Super-conductors BRUNSWICK CORP 17 March 1967 [17 March 1966] 57614/69 Divided out of 1203291 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A composite super-conductor comprises a matrix containing distributed elements each less than 12 microns thick and of a super-conductive alloy which is not a chemical compound. Fig. 1 shows a plurality of filaments 13 of Nb or Zr-Nb alloy in a matrix body 14 of a nickel-iron alloy in a can 15 of copper or nickel-iron alloy. The assembly is subjected to successive constrictions and a heating step may be employed to provide a diffusion zone of alloy at the filament matrix interface. Alternative arrangements are described where the can contains a spiral of two or more layers of different materials, or a series of concentric tubes or of planar layers. The filaments may consist of Nb and other combinations of materials said to be suitable are: Zr-Nb; Ti-Nb; Ti-V; Mo-Re; Ti-Zr-Nb; Ti-Nb-V; Zr-Nb-V. One assembly may comprise filaments of different materials.
|
