1,203,468. Rotary thermal regenerators. AIR PREHEATER CO. Inc. 23 Aug., 1967 [23 Aug., 1966], No. 38890/67. Heading F4K. A rotary thermal regenerator comprises a motor driven cylindrical rotor, divided into compartments containing heat exchange material by radial partitions attached to a vertical rotor post, and enclosed in an outer housing having opposite end plates with spaced apertures for directing through the rotor a heating fluid and a fluid to be heated, one or both ends of the rotor post being rotatively supported by a bearing capable of moving the rotor along its axis. In the form shown, the lower end of the rotor post is connected by a rod 52 to a piston 48 in a cylinder 46 which is fixed to the rotor housing, a fluid under pressure being admitted to the underside of the piston through a manually controlled pipe 58 or a pipe 58<SP>1</SP> controlled by an automatic valve 62. The valve 62 may be pre-set by adjustment of the valve seat 64. A similar arrangement at the top of the rotor post includes a piston (50, Fig. 3) within a cylinder (55) and a pipe supplying the same or a different fluid to that used in the lower bearing to the underside of the piston (50). When the pressure fluid is a liquid, a pump (66) may be provided to recirculate leakage liquid from the low to the high pressure side of the piston.
