DIGITAL BROADCASTING SYSTEM AND PROCESSING METHOD

A digital broadcast transmitting/receiving system and a data processing method are provided to improve reception performance of a receiver by multiplexing known data and traffic information data and transmitting the multiplexed data. A traffic information message generating part generates a traffic information message which includes status information and location information corresponding to the status information. The status information includes current congestion traffic information and congestion traffic prediction information. A pre-processing part encodes traffic information data including the traffic information message and forms a traffic information data packet which includes the encoded traffic information data and predetermined known data. A multiplexer multiplexes the traffic information data packet and a main data packet. A trellis encoder includes one or more memories, trellis-encodes data outputted from the multiplexer, and initializes the memories by initialization data if the data outputted from the multiplexer corresponds to the beginning of a consecutive known data sequence.
