A method and an apparatus for processing a media signal are provided to generate a signal with surround effect in environment when it is impossible for a decoding device which receives a bit stream including a down-mix signal and spatial information of a multi-channel signal to recover the multi-channel signal. A spatial information converter(1000) generates rendering information by using spatial information indicating a characteristic between multi-sources and filter information for providing surround effect. A window length determining unit variably determines the length of a window function used when the spatial information is processed.
