C-C, N-C or O-C linkages are formed in organic compounds by reacting an organothallous compound (prepared by reaction of a salt forming organic compound with a thallous (1-4C) alkoxide) with a compound having a - C-X or -C(=O)X group (X is halo). Processes exemplified are C-alkylation of #- dicarbonyl compounds, C-acylation of #-dicarbonyl compounds, O-acylation of #-dicarbonyl compounds (via enol form), esterification of phenols, formation of anhydrides from carboxylic acids, N-alkylation of heterocyclic compounds with ring NH groups, and O-acylation of lactams. Intermediates isolated are the thallous salts of acetylacetone, triacetyl methane, phenol, benzoic acid, 2-pyridone, adenine, 6-chloropurine and purine. Nebularine can br prepared by hydrolysis of the condensation product of chlorotriacetylribofuranose with the thallous salt of purine. |
