A drum type washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to shorten the water supply time by using a steam generating unit to produce water of a high temperature. A drum type washing machine includes a water tub(20), a rotary tub(30), a water supply unit, a steam generating unit(70), and a control section. The rotary tub is provided in the water tub. The water supply unit supplies washing water into the water tub. The steam generating unit supplies steam into the rotary tub. The control section controls the water supply unit and the steam generating unit to supply the water of high temperature into the rotary tub through the steam generating unit.
