In a vehicle spring-engaged friction clutch, substantially the whole travel of a clutch pedal 10 is utilized, with linkwork 11-14, to progressively reduce the pressure on the clutch pressure plate, complete withdrawal of the plate to completely disengage the clutch being effected by power means, e.g. a compressed air or hydraulically operated servo piston 19, actuated by the clutch pedal on completion of its stroke. As shown, the pedal 10 acts through linkwork 11-14 on the clutch disengaging lever 15 carrying a shaft 16 and a disengaging fork 17. The servo piston 19 also acts on the lever 15 and is actuated by a valve 22 which normally vents a line 21 at 25 but, on completion of the pedal stroke, is abutted at 24 by the pedal and connects line 21 to a pressure accumulator at 26 to completely withdraw the clutch pressure plate. A pin and slot, or like, lost motion connection 28, 29 (which may be provided with a spring), between a link 13 and an adjustable link 14 allows the servo piston to pivot lever 15 whilst the pedal remains in the same position. The valve 22 is provided with a return spring, the effect of which on the pedal 10 is substantially equal to the effect on the pedal of the clutch apply springs (shown symbolically at 24), so that actuation of the power means has no appreciable effect on the force on the pedal 10. A separate throttle valve, or a suitable throttle in the control valve 22, ensures that the piston 19 is relieved slowly, on raising the pedal 10, until the lost-motion in connection 28, 29 is taken up and pedal 10 resumes control.
