Material is preferentially removed from the surface of a workpiece 17, e.g. an elliptical tube, by measuring dynamically, e.g. using a transducer 42, the thickness of successive overlapping areas of the workpiece surface, and eroding selectively material from the areas in succession by electro-machining in response to the dynamic measurement, e.g. by controlling the power supply 29 to the machining electrode so that the thickness of the workpiece is rendered more uniform. As shown, workpiece 17 rotates under machining head 11, comprising collar portions 15, 16 having nylon wheels 19 mounted therein, while electrolyte 36 is pumped by pump 33 through flexible conduit 32 and a passage in the electrode on to the workpiece.</p> |
