A method and an apparatus for transmitting RA(Router Advertisement)/RS(Router Solicitation) messages in an AP(Access Point) are provided to reduce a waste of radio channel bandwidths and ensure smooth handover for mobile nodes by determining the transmission cycle of an RA message after confirming whether an AP is an edge AP. An AP receives an RS message from a mobile node. The AP compares a specific subnet, where the AP is located, with the subnet of the source address of the received RS message(82). In case the two subnets are not identical, an edge determination part determines that the AP is an edge AP(83). In this case, the AP increases an edge count value that indicates how many neighbor subnets the AP is bounded by(84). The AP divides the basic transmission cycle of an RA message by the product of a certain weight value by the increased edge count value and obtains the transmission cycle of the RA message(87).
