An elevator of screw shaft type is provided to improve moving speed of a cage remarkably and to reduce the whole length of a screw shaft. An elevator of screw shaft type includes a screw shaft(1) formed with a left-hand thread(3) and a right-hand thread(5), a driving device(10) to drive the screw shaft, first and second elevation devices(20,30) mounted to the left-hand thread and the right-hand thread of the screw shaft to be elevated and lowered, first and second pulleys(W1,W2) mounted to the first and second elevation devices, and a wire rope(50) to suspend a cage(40). The wire rope passes through the first and second pulleys so that the cage is elevated or lowered due to the elevation or the lowering of the first and second pulleys. The screw shaft is vertically erected on a bottom(60) and the left-hand thread is disposed in the upper side of the right-hand thread. The driving device includes a geared motor(11) having a driving gear(12) engaged with a driven motor(13) mounted at the lower end of the screw shaft. Due to this, the screw shaft can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise.
