Provided are a negative electrode carbon material for a lithium ion secondary battery, which is manufactured in a low cost by using middle-grade white bran or high-grade white bran, and a manufacturing method thereof. The negative electrode carbon material for a lithium ion secondary battery is manufactured by the steps of: (1) removing brown rice rind and a seed coat from brown rice to obtain rice starch portions; and (2) burning the rice starch portions. The rice starch portion is middle-grade white bran or high-grade white bran to be recovered when brown rice is polished. The negative electrode carbon material obtained by burning the rice starch portions has a broader peak at 2theta=40-50° and a sharper peak at 2theta=42-44° in powder X-ray(CuKalpha) diffraction. |
