An IP(Internet Protocol) television multi-service system and method are provided to perform various communication functions including a messenger by using a set top box in the Internet environment. An IP television multi-service system includes a server(110) which transmits a digital broadcasting signal, and a set top box(120,140) which receives the digital broadcasting signal from the server and outputs a channel selected by a user from the received digital broadcasting signal. The server includes an authentication information database(111), a messenger authentication unit(112) for outputting a messenger use signal when identification information of the user, received from the set top box, corresponds to authentication information stored in the authentication information database, and a messenger controller(113) for controlling messenger service to be used by the user when the messenger use signal is output. The set top box generates a predetermined interface window for a messenger in a predetermined region of a display unit(121,141) when the messenger use signal is output, receives a message and receiver information of the message from the user through the interface window, and transmits the message and the receiver information.
