A cable broadcasting system and a codec method are provided to code and decode various input sources regardless of kinds of input sources by downloading necessary codec algorithms from a codec server based on position information of the codec server having various codec algorithms. A cable set-top box includes a cable modem, and applies a codec algorithm downloaded through the cable modem for coding or decoding an input source if the cable set-top box receives the input source. A codec server communicates with the cable modem through a communication network, and stores at least one codec algorithm. A host server assigns IP to the cable modem in a process of initializing the cable modem and provides position information of the codec server.
