A multi-domain LCD and a method for driving the same are provided to improve the response speed, by applying a pretilt voltage to a direction controlling electrode so as to enhance a fringe field. A multi-domain LCD comprises a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer injected between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate includes a gate line(110), a data line(120) crossing the gate line, a thin film transistor connected to the gate line and the data line, and a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor. The pixel electrode has one or more domain regulating elements(131,132,133). The second substrate includes a common electrode having one or more domain regulating elements(251,252,253), and direction controlling electrodes(221,222,223) for controlling the titling directions of liquid crystal molecules.
