Acyclic olefins are disproportionated in the presence of a catalyst comprising Re2(CO)10 on Al2O3.C3- 30 alkenes e.g. propylene up to octenes are described as suitable feedstocks. An example describes the disproportionation of propylene to ethylene and n-butene in a fluidized reactor.ALSO:Disproportionation catalysts comprise Re(CO)5 on Al2O3. The Al2O3 may be pretreated, e.g. with acid, fluidised by an ascending column of inert gas and then subjected to contact with Re(CO)5. In examples g -Al2O3 of surface area 255 m2/gm and pore size 55 was treated with HCl, washed with distilled water, dried, activated in air at 580 DEG C, then in nitrogen at 580 DEG C and fluidised in contact with Re(CO)5. The product contained 10% Re(CO)5.
