1286650 Pressure vessel CRUCIBLE Inc 5 Dec 1969 [12 Dec 1968] 59638/69 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions B4-5 and C7] A pressure vessel 12 for use in compressing preheated powdered metal charges in a container (not shown) located on a pedestal 16 within the vessel is closed at its upper end by a removable plug 27 and pressurising fluid, e.g. helium, is supplied to the vessel at inlets 62 from an accumulator 64, which has been charged by a pump 56 and supplies the inlets 62, through valves 60 which permit the container to be pressurised in less than 10 minutes to compress the charge to 95% of theoretical density. After compression, the container 12 is vented by a valve 59. The closure 27 is inserted into, and withdrawn from, the vessel 12 by the ram 30 of a hydraulic piston cylinder arrangement 31, with which it is mounted to a housing 26 which is laterally reciprocable, by a hydraulic piston cylinder arrangement 34, along rods 22 into a position permitting the charge to be deposited through the open upper end of the container by an overhead crane. In its closed position the plug 27 seats, at an annular seal carried thereby, upon a vessel liner 20 which is replaceably located, whereby the pressurised volume of the container 12 may be minimised for different size charges. The plug 27 is locked in its closing position by a pin 44 which is reciprocated, by a piston cylinder arrangement, over supporting rollers and through aligned holes, e.g. 21, in the plug and pressure vessel walls. |
