A liquid crystal display device and a driving method thereof are provided to minimize degradation of image quality by improving response characteristic of an LCD in turning on/off of the LCD. A liquid crystal display device includes a switching control signal generator and a gamma voltage generator(112). The switching control signal generator compares image data gray levels of the previous and current frames with each other and generates a switching control signal based on the variation direction of the gray level. The gamma voltage generator outputs one of first and second gamma voltages according to a signal from the switching control signal generator. The first gamma voltage is higher than the upper-most gamma voltage by at least one gray level. The second gamma voltage is lower than the lower-most gamma voltage by at least one gray level. The gamma voltage generator includes first and second switching elements(171,172).
