An apparatus and a method for measuring backlash are provided to increase the reliability of a measuring value by measuring the backlash while rotating a gear shaft of a measured object. An apparatus for measuring a backlash includes a body(100), a shaft rotation mounting portion(200), a measuring portion(300), and a balance portion(400). The body rotates gear shafts of a measured object to measure a backlash. The shaft rotation mounting portion fixes the measured object and is installed at one side of a base plate(110). The measuring portion is installed at another side of the base plate to be engaged with a gear shaft coupler(310). The balance portion is arranged at both sides of the measuring portion and alternately loads and unloads a weight(410) on and from a measuring disc(330) of the measuring portion.
