A device and a method for authenticating power-on/use of a computer are provided to supply convenience and security at the same time by authenticating a user when the user turns on a power button by installing a fingerprint sensor to the power button. The power button(100) combined with the fingerprint sensor stores fingerprint data while a power-on signal is generated if a fingerprint touches the power button. An S/B(Switch Board) ICH7(I/O(Input/Output) Control Hub)(220) applies power to a main frame of the computer by the power-on signal received from the power button. A fingerprint comparing/authenticating unit authenticates the user by comparing the fingerprint data stored in the power button with the previously stored fingerprint button while connecting to the power button by receiving the power applied from the S/B ICH7. The power button combined with the fingerprint sensor is connected to the fingerprint comparing/authenticating unit with a USB(Universal Serial Bus) interface.
