An apparatus and a method for controlling power consumption in a digital broadcasting receiver are provided to operate only one antenna in a strong field area to save battery power. An apparatus for reducing power consumption in a digital broadcasting receiver includes a tuner(100), an ADC(Analog to Digital Converter) unit(112a,112b), a rake receiver(114), an FEC(Forward Error Correction) decoder(116), and a power controller(160). The tuner has two antenna inputs. The ADC unit converts I/Q signals output from the tuner into digital signals. The rake receiver converts the signals output from the ADC unit into a single signal. The FEC decoder generates a transport stream from the signal output from the rake receiver and determines whether the signal is normal. The power controller measures receiving sensitivity information by using information output from the tuner, the rake receiver and the FEC decoder and controls the power of the tuner and the power of the ADC unit according to the measurement result.
