An organic mercaptan or organic sulphide is obtained by reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound with hydrogen sulphide or with an organic mercaptan in the presence of an organic peroxide catalyst and an iron phthalocyanine, e.g. ferrous phthalocyanine or chloroferric phthalocyanine. The preferred peroxide catalysts are cumene hydroperoxide and t-butyl hydroperoxide. The olefinic compounds may be acyclic or cyclic, preferably C 5 -C 12 dicyclic olefins or C 5 -C 8 acyclic olefins. The organic mercaptans which may be used as starting materials are preferably alkyl or alicyclic mercaptans containing up to 12 carbon atoms but also include phenyl and tolyl mercaptans and mercaptobenzthiazole. The catalyst may be added dissolved in a solvent, e.g. a portion of the olefin to be reacted or an inert solvent such as benzene or cyclohexane, and the presence of water is not normally deleterious.</p> |
