A clear transparent linear polyamide having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0,4 in a solution of 90 parts phenol and 10 parts ethanol at 35 DEG C. and a glass transition temperature above 120 DEG C., of (A) a bifunctional organic dicarboxylic acid <FORM:0924530/IV(a)/1> or ROC-Z-COR, where R is halo, hydroxy or alkoxy having up to six carbon atoms and Z is phenylene or a normal alkylene chain having from 4 to 8 carbon atoms; and (B) an organic diamine <FORM:0924530/IV(a)/2> or H2N-CH2-Z1-CH2-NH2 wher Z1 is phenylene or a normal alkylene chain having from 4 to 8 carbon atoms; at least one of (A) and (B) being a compound containing a fluorene nucleus. Specified dicarboxylic acids are pimelic, adipic, sebacic, phthalic and isophthalic acid and 9:9-bis(21-carboxyethyl) fluorene. Specified diamines are 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and hexamethylene, octamethylene, decamethylene and isomeric xylene diamines. The polyamides are preferably made via the salts of the corresponding diamines and dicarboxylic acids. The examples describe the preparation of polyamides from salts of:- (II) and (VIII) 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and adipic acid; (IV) 9:9-bis(21-carboxyethyl) fluorene and hexamethylene diamine; (VI) 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and 9:9-bis(21-carboxyethyl) fluorene and (VII) 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and sebacic acid. U.S.A. Specifications 2,130,253 and 2,130,948 are referred to.ALSO:Salts are made by the reaction of isopropanol or isopropanol and water of: -(I) 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and adipic acid; (III) hexamethylene diamine and 9:9-bis(2-carboxyethyl) fluorene; (V) 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and 9:9-bis(2-carboxyethyl) fluorene and (VII) 9:9-bis(31-aminopropyl) fluorene and sebacic acid. U.S.A. Specifications 2,320,029 and 2,339,218 are referred to. |
