<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical method for treating glaucoma and a related medical apparatus for treating. <P>SOLUTION: The method comprises trabecular bypass surgery, which involves bypassing diseased trabecular meshwork 21 with the use of a seton implant 31. The seton implant 31 is used to prevent a healing process known as occlusion, which has a tendency to close surgically created openings in the trabecular meshwork 21. The surgical method and novel implant are addressed to the trabecular meshwork 21, which is a major site of resistance to outflow in glaucoma. In addition to bypassing the diseased trabecular meshwork 21 at the level of the trabecular meshwork 21, existing outflow pathways are also used or restored. The seton implant 31 is positioned through the trabecular meshwork 21 so that an inlet end of the seton implant 31 is exposed to the anterior chamber of the eye and an outlet end is positioned into fluid collection channels at about an exterior surface of the trabecular meshwork 21 or up to the level of aqueous veins. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
