PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner and a refrigerant control method therefor that can improve operating efficiency by shortening the distance between an evaporator and an expansion device. SOLUTION: The air conditioner includes: an outdoor unit comprising a compressor, an outdoor heat exchanger, and a four-way valve for switching a refrigerant passage; an indoor unit comprising an indoor heat exchanger; an indoor expansion part disposed on a refrigerant inflow side of the indoor heat exchanger for a cooling operation to expand a refrigerant; an outdoor expansion part disposed on a refrigerant inflow side of the outdoor heat exchanger for a heating operation to expand the refrigerant; and a control part for controlling the indoor expansion part and outdoor expansion part such that the refrigerant expands in the indoor expansion part in a cooling operation and the refrigerant expands in the outdoor expansion part in a heating operation.
