PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect and control the position of a pickup when information is recorded/reproduced in/from the recording surface or area of an optical disk having no track information. SOLUTION: This optical disk device includes a pickup 65 for recording and/or reproducing predetermined information in/from a recording surface or area by radiating a laser beam to the recording surface or area of an optical disk 60 having no track information, a feed motor 66 for moving the pickup 65 in the diameter direction of the optical disk 60, an encoder plate 62 disposed along the moving path of the pickup 65 in the backside of a cover member fixed to the pickup 65, a sensor 63 moved integrally with the encoder plate 62 to emit a light to the encoder plate 62, and to receive its reflected or transmitted light to follow the movement of the pickup 65, and a control unit 81 for positioning and controlling the pickup 65 in an optional position of the recording surface or area of the optical disk 60.
