PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphorus-containing polyester resin that can be used for solving the problems, of conventional techniques, of formation of aldehydes such as acetaldehyde or cyclic oligomers on molding, deterioration in transparency of molded items, or the like and has a decreased content of metal atoms eluting from a polymerization vessel by deactivating actions of a polycondensation catalyst used in the manufacture of the polyester, a polyester resin composition efficiently producing a blow molded item or the like that is excellent in transparency and flavor retention, is free from problems such as deterioration in transparency caused by mold stains on continuous molding and exhibits excellent dimensional stability under heat, and its use. SOLUTION: The polyester resin is mainly composed of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component and a glycol component and contains 100-10,000 ppm, in terms of the phosphorus atom, of a phosphorous compound, and has a Zn atom content of at most 5 ppm.
