PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a plane light source device capable of uniformly distributing mercury in a light source, and to provide equipment of manufacturing a plane light source for practicing the same. SOLUTION: In the method of manufacturing the plane light source device, a light source body with a plurality of discharge spaces is formed for discharge gas to be injected in. Then, impurities in the discharge spaces are removed. After that, mercury gas is made to disperse in the discharge spaces. Further, the light source body is forcibly cooled from a temperature when the mercury gas exists in a gaseous state to an ambient temperature. Therefore, as a period in which the mercury gas stays in a temperature range for it to be liquefied is drastically curtailed, and a phenomenon that the liquefied mercury moves toward an area with low temperature within the discharge spaces is restrained.
