PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display that solves the problems about metal black matrix and resin material black matrix, in an effective manner. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display comprises an upper substrate, a liquid crystal layer 2 and a lower substrate 3. The lower substrate 3 has a plurality of pixel electrodes, a plurality of metal lines and a plurality of switch elements disposed thereon. Each switch element comprises a source electrode 21, a drain electrode 22 and a gate electrode 23. The surface between the source electrode 21 and the drain electrode 22 has a groove, and a passivation layer (insulating layer) covers the surface of the source electrode 21 and the drain electrode 22, and forms two inclined planes on the side faces facing each other of the step of the source electrode 21 and the step of the drain electrode 22, respectively. The two inclined planes of the passivation layer are connected to each other, above the groove and form a concave or a cavity in the groove, in which the contained angle by the two inclined planes of the passivation layer is in a range of 5 to 50 degrees.
