PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high yield a fluorenone useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, macromolecular compounds for electronic materials, dyes, pigments, photosensitizers, etc. by oxidizing the corresponding fluorene with molecular oxygen. SOLUTION: The method for producing the fluorenone comprises oxidizing the corresponding fluorene such as a (substituted) fluorene with molecular oxygen in an organic solvent such as toluene or a xylene in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst such as a quaternary ammonium salt and a solid alkali metal hydroxide at 30-100°C.
