PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To track accurately and efficiently an object such as an incoming airplane up to a proper stopping point. SOLUTION: This system for tracking an incoming object 12 has a means 20 for generating an optical pulse; means 21, 22, 24, 25 for projecting the pulse outward to the incoming object, and reflecting the pulse from the object; a means 20 for collecting the optical pulse reflected from the object; and a means 62 for detecting a position to a virtual axis extended from a prescribed point, and detecting the distance between the object and the prescribed point, to thereby enable tracking of the object position. A comparison table compared with a contour table reflecting information on laser scanning and showing a known shape is generated, and a distance distribution table for recording a distribution of the distance from an object nose to a measuring device relative to each reflected pulse is generated, and the average distance to a scheduled stopping position is calculated.
