PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of performing processing in each of respective areas by properly dividing an image area into the areas with different characteristics when compressing and storing an image in which the areas with different characteristics such as characters and images coexist. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus for dividing image data into a plurality of layers, compressing each of the layers in different systems from one another and subsequently storing the image data as one file has a character layer editing means for editing a character layer being one of the plurality of layers and a displaying means for displaying the image of an initial state of the image, the image of an undetermined image and the image of each of the plurality of undetermined layers, wherein the displaying means constitutes an image processing apparatus for updating display each time the image before determination is updated.
