Filling the cans of a can creel with continuous sliver, where the cans are divided into two groups and the cans of one group are filled sequentially with silver via an overhead conveyor while the cans of the other group are emptied, comprises arranging the cans so that the first-filled can of the first group and the last-filled can of the second group are directly opposite each other and the sliver is supplied along a path parallel to the discharge side of the creel. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the above process, comprising a can creel (1) with multiple cans (3.1, 3.8, 3.15, 3.22) and a delivery device (4) that travels above the creel and has a moving conveyor (5) for supplying sliver (6) to the cans, where the cans form two groups (1.1, 1.2) and are filled alternately by the delivery device, and comprising a sliver supply device (24) that can move along the creel parallel to the delivery device so that the sliver is supplied along a path parallel to the discharge side of the creel.
