PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine pumping loss reducing method and system therefor reducing compression energy of excess air unnecessary during partial load as is in cruising to improve fuel consumption. SOLUTION: The pumping loss reducing system comprises a rotation speed detection means (8) for detecting rotation speed of an engine (2), a device (8 and 20) for measuring a fuel feed quantity (q) to the engine (2), an exhaust valve lift control device (10) for controlling a lift of an exhaust valve (12) and a control unit (6), wherein the control unit (6) performs control of exhausting part of the air compressed in a compression stroke (C) by the exhaust valve lift control device (10) when the engine rotation speed and the fuel quantity (q) fed to the engine (2) are within specific regions.
