The method involves analyzing data of a motor vehicle (1) by a control device (2) for controlling the vehicle, and producing data for controlling the vehicle. A storage device (3) is provided with a removable data carrier (5) in the vehicle, and a part of the data for controlling the vehicle is stored at the data carrier. The storage device is brought to a normal mode and a diagnose mode, where the storage device executes a function in the normal mode and controls the data at the data carrier in the diagnose mode. An independent claim is also included for a storage device for diagnosing a motor vehicle with a removable data carrier.
