A mobile terminal for setting a pilot search window size according to a radio environment and its method are provided to smoothly perform a handoff operation in an area where several pilot PNs are received. A manipulation unit(34) receives a user manipulation command. A wireless communication unit(31) transmits/receives a radio signal to/from a mobile communication network through an antenna. When a call connection command is inputted from the manipulation unit, a call processing unit(361) processes a call connection to the mobile communication network through the wireless communication unit according to a call processing protocol. When a call connection signal is inputted from the call processing unit, a pilot monitoring unit(362) monitors whether there is a pilot PN that can become an active set among multiple base station pilot PNs inputted from the wireless communication unit. When a pilot PN that can become an active set is inputted from the pilot monitoring unit(362), a PSMM(Pilot Strength Measurement Message) processing unit(363) generates a PSMM including the information on the pilot PN that can become the active set, and transmits it to the mobile communication network. A search window size setting unit(364) sets a pilot search window size based on pilot PN information to be added to the active set inputted from the mobile communication network through the wireless communicating unit and a pilot search window size.
