PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for rubbing an alignment layer capable of not only rapidly adjusting a gap between an alignment layer and a rubbing roll but providing uniform alignment regulating force over the entire alignment layer of a large area by wholly or selectively raising and descending a rubbing table and a rubbing roll according to rubbing conditions so as to bring the rubbing roll into contact with the alignment layer, and to provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element by using the above system and method. SOLUTION: The system for rubbing an alignment layer of a liquid crystal display element includes a rubbing table where a substrate having an alignment layer is mounted, a rubbing roll with a rubbing cloth wound thereon, placed on the rubbing table and rubbing the alignment layer by touching and rotating, and a control unit for raising and descending the rubbing table and the rubbing roll by the alignment regulating force in the alignment layer and bringing the rubbing roll into contact with the alignment layer to rub the alignment layer.
